Archery and Hunting Arrows

Evolution of the Arrow

Archery arrows have been made and used by hunters for centuries. Arrows have been used to serve many purposes throughout the centuries, but now it is mostly used for hunting and archery. Hunting arrows are constantly changing and evolving to become faster and more accurate.

The weight of an arrow point is an important factor is an arrow’s overall accuracy and is calculated in grains. Typically, target shooters choose light arrow points, which weigh less than 100 grains. However, bow hunters generally prefer heavy points, which weigh about 90 to 170 grains. Arrows are a crucial tool for hunters and archers, and are always being improved and changed.

Arrow Materials

There are several main classifications of crossbow arrows: wood, fiberglass, aluminum, and carbon. Wood arrows were made by early people across the globe; however, when the wood warps the arrow becomes useless and a new arrow must be made. Fiberglass arrows are more consistent, but are also very brittle and break easily. Aluminum arrows are lightweight and long-lasting, but very costly to make. Carbon arrows have an aluminum core and an outer carbon coating, which makes them faster and lighter. They are more expensive, but well worth the price and are the most popular arrows used today.

Parts of Crossbow Arrows

Arrows are used in many cultures across the world for thousands of different purposes, and this has created many new varieties of crossbows. Crossbows are made in many shapes and sizes according to the region and culture of people. Despite this diversity, all arrows have the same basic structure.

Fletchings

Fletchings are used to stabilize an arrow’s direction by providing a slight drag through the air. Fletchings are traditionally made with feathers, but now they are mostly made with plastic.

Nock

A nock keeps the arrow from slipping out of place in the crossbow when it is being drawn back in preparation for shooting.

Shaft

Arrow shafts are traditionally made with wood, but are now being made with aluminum and carbon. The shaft serves as an arrow’s base, which all the other parts are attached to, so it needs to be strong and stiff.

Arrowheads

The arrowhead is the most important part of an arrow because it allows an arrow to serve its true purpose. Arrowheads can be sharp or blunt according to their purpose.

Types of Arrowheads

Broadheads

Broadheads are a popular arrowhead used by hunters around the world. They have several sharp blades at the end for maximum penetration.

Field Tips

Field tips are useful for beginning hunters because they can be easily removed from any obstruction if a target is missed. They can also be used for shooting practice because they are easily removed.

Target Points

Target points are shaped like a bullet and are very sharp at the end. They are used for shooting practice because they penetrate the target easily without causing too much damage to the target.

Safety Arrows

Safety arrows have wide and padded heads to inflict minimal damage to a target. They are generally used in war reenactments to cause as little damage as possible to participants and their surroundings.
