It was a warm east Texas morning in June and I was hunting with my 7-year-old daughter Melanie and a good friend Rickey at one of my favorite exotic hunting ranches. We set up a portable blind near a creek bed where these exotic sheep like to funnel through and feed. This was the first time here with my daughter and she had her Horton Yukon SL crossbow ready to take her first exotic ram.

A crossbow is a great way to get kids started in the sport of hunting, they can pull the trigger without all the kick and bang. While enjoying a peaceful morning, we soon noticed a group of sheep moving in our direction. I knew it was important to control my inner excitement. Because I needed to keep my daughter calm. The sheep seemed to move in tight groups and we had to wait patiently for one to wander away from the security of the herd.

Finally, a nice Texas Dall separated from the group and Melanie was able to make a shot at 25 yards. Melanie’s Texas Dall sheep scored a Bronze metal at 84 2/8 with Records of Exotics. This was a great memorable experience for both of us and I’m sure there will be many more. - Simon Shutters
